Stainless steel sinks

What material is your kitchen sink made of?

Most likely, it is stainless steel, one of the most popular choices in kitchen finishes, from countertops to appliances to sinks. In 1913 Harry Brearly discovered that adding chromium to low carbon steel gives it stain resistance. It’s no wonder stainless steel has become such a popular material in modern kitchens since, in addition to corrosion resistance, it cleans up easily and looks great.

Before investing in a stainless steel sink for your next project, give consideration to quality material choices and good design.

Begin your evaluation by looking for quality materials. The top surface of the sink should be 300 series satin finish stainless steel to resist stains and corrosion. Thicker metal such as 16-18 gauge will be stronger and won’t vibrate and dent as easily as thinner material. A rubbery undercoating on the side that is in the base cabinet serves two purposes; to deaden sound and reduce condensation.

Good design is also key to making a wise sink selection. Look for a 10” deep sink with straight sides to minimize splashing and maximize the sink capacity. An integral drain and basket adds value. We specify rear drains where possible to maximize the cabinet space below the sink and improve drainage when dishes are piled up in the sink.

Many quality sink choices are available in stainless steel finishes from Just, Blanco, Elkay, Bradley, Moen and other manufacturers.
