National Bike to Work Day – Forest Preserves
During the month of May, the League of American Bicyclists celebrates the bicycle.
And on Friday, May 17 we are cycling to the office in celebration of National Bike to Work Day. Just for fun, I may wear my Colavita Chicagoland team jersey. Bleck & Bleck Architects is the local sponsor for the team of 70 men and women who are avid recreational and competitive cyclists. If you are an experienced rider and have an interest in competitive cycling, contact me for more info. We are excited to sponsor the club and looking forward to a successful racing season for the members.
The club rides follow a varying circuit throughout Lake County. Some of our favorite rides take us down scenic country roads, alongside the Des Plaines River, and through Lake County’s beautiful forest preserves. As a valued client for many years, the LCFP offers extensive opportunities for bicycling enjoyment including lightly travelled paved roads and well maintained gravel trails.
The newest addition to the trail system is at Hastings Lake Forest Preserve in Lake Villa. Improvements currently underway include 4 miles of paved and crushed stone trails as well as restroom facilities, 3-season and open picnic shelters, and convenient parking at the trailheads at Gelden Road and Munn Road. When the preserve opens in the fall of 2013, riders will enjoy roads and trails through the preserve’s restored native meadow and woodland habitats.
Bicycling is a great way to save fuel and be a good steward of the environment. You can explore new places or discover new activities right in your own town. Whether riding for pleasure or as transportation to work, bicycling is a great way to stay fit!
This spring, whatever your fitness level, be sure to take advantage of bicycling at the forest preserves and throughout beautiful Lake County. I hope to see you out on the roads and trails soon!
