Pay Attention to Details
“The details are not the details. They make the design.” – Charles Eames
Acclaimed American architect and furniture designer Charles Eames was on to something. Details really do make the design.
Charles and his wife Bernice “Ray” Eames extensively explored project needs and constraints prior to finalizing the design details. Charles and Ray were technological pioneers who made significant contributions to modern design in the 20th century.
You probably know them for their design of the iconic molded plywood Eames Lounge Chair and their innovative Pacific Palisades home.
The couple also explored textiles, graphic design, photography and film. Like Charles and Ray Eames, many architects have additional design interests. Both Bob and Chuck like to sketch and are interested in woodworking, music, construction, art, and photography.
“Details are not details. They make the product.” – Charles Eames
Architects use their hobbies to explore design ideas and experiment with materials, relationships, and space. They make detailed sketches long before their designs are solidified in construction drawings. Sometimes this exploration of ideas and details leads to an entirely new design direction.
If you’re in the LA area, you can visit the Eames House for an exterior, self-guided tour. It is located at 203 Chautauqua Boulevard in Pacific Palisades and free parking is available nearby on Corona del Mar Street. Enjoy!
