Color trends tend to reflect our world – the way we feel, how we want to look, and the environment with which we surround ourselves. In 2014, we are feeling positive, confident, and strong. We want environments that reflect this perception.

Architects and interior designers focus on color trends for use in their projects. Often, we look to the clothing and fashion industry for cues to inform architectural color trends. By combining key trending colors with complimentary shades, we are able to create an up to the moment palette that sets the tone for the space.

Let’s take a look at the preferences expressed by one of the most influential colorists, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“Designers take a modern twist on the traditional for spring 2014 by pairing soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colorful equilibrium. Inspired by a mixture of blooming flowers, travels abroad and strong, confident women, designers use color to refresh, revive and defy conventional wisdom.”

Radiant Orchid is Pantone’s 2014 color of the year.

“blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple—one that draws you in with its beguiling charm. A captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid emanates great joy, love and health.”

Furnishings and finishes manufacturers also contribute to and follow color trends. Paint manufacturers introduce their own color palettes each year. These color palettes enable architects and interior designers to integrate the latest trends in fashion, home furnishings, textiles, and art into their building projects.

Paint and coatings manufacturers Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore offer choices that work well with a variety of room styles. They are also a suitable basis for creating attractive color schemes for any room.

Benjamin Moore introduced Breath of Fresh Air, a light and airy blue, in this way:
