Carpet Tile: Design Flexibility in a Small Package
Carpet tile is a good choice for commercial flooring when you want a flexible product with a soft look and feel and sound-absorbent quality. We have specified carpet tiles frequently for general office spaces (including our own), restaurant banquet rooms, and medical facilities.
Here’s what we like about carpet tiles:
Appearance:
- Many colors, textures and patterns available
- Mix and match for a variety of creative patterns and design flexibility
- Coordinates with other hard and soft surfaces
- Surface is typically made of nylon or polyester fibers and is available in natural fibers as well
Performance:
- Durable and long-lasting low pile, withstanding rolling chairs and foot traffic
- Resists spills and stains
- Resilient, non-skid surface and backing offer a cushioned feel
- Sound attenuating quality
Installation:
- Easy to install with limited installation skills in most instances
- Installs over most smooth sub-flooring materials such as concrete, vinyl, and wood
- Can be installed using simple tools such as a sharp knife and metal straightedge for cutting tiles to fit against walls, corners, and odd shapes
- Product comes in small boxes that are easy to move in elevators and to store prior to installation.
- Ideal flooring product for high-rise construction because it is easier to move and handle than 6’-12’ carpet rolls
- Installers have fewer injuries, due to safer handling of smaller size product
- Tiles are adhesive-backed to stick directly to the floor or they can be adhered to each other using repositionable adhesive.
Maintenance:
- Easy to clean – just vacuum and spot clean as needed
- Low pile height dries quickly
- Easy to remove and replace a small stained tile without affecting the remainder of the room
- Tile replacement can be done without disrupting business operations
- Replacement can occur without removing furnishings systems
Availability:
- Manufactured by most commercial carpet manufacturers
- Can be sourced direct from manufacturers and found at big-box stores
Green:
- Available in renewable and recycled materials
- Recycled tiles reduce off-gassing common with new construction materials
- Recyclable through manufacturers after they serve their intended purpose
- Less waste during installation
- Adhesives have much lower VOCs than traditional carpeting
Once your carpet tiles have been installed, maintain a good appearance by vacuuming and spot cleaning regularly. Carpet tiles can be an especially good choice for basements, which can be damp. A low-pile carpet tile is less absorbent and will dry more quickly. Be sure to consider carpet tile, a flexible flooring option, for your next commercial project.
We recently used carpet tiles in the large banquet room at Mickey Finn’s Brewery. By customizing the pattern we were able to create an illusion of wood plank flooring.
